Japan Insight Vol. 18 | Yokohama Game Art Exhibition, Kyoto Zarka Solo Exhibition, Tokyo FONDAN Souvenirs, and Hokkaido Christmas Illuminations
分享
Hello everyone, I’m Benny! In this issue of "Japan Early Alert" Vol. 18, I want to take you from the indie game art exhibition inside Yokohama Station, to the skateboarding and sculpture exhibition in Kyoto next spring, then head to Tokyo for winter-limited raw chocolate souvenirs, and finally check out the Christmas forest that will light up early in Hokkaido, as well as the Tadao Ando architecture open for only two days in Osaka. This time, I want to remind you most of all: double-check the closing days, ticket release dates, and official start dates. Don't save the pretty pictures only to arrive and find out it's closed or not yet open.

1. Yokohama Under Commons Vol. 2: Indie Game Art Exhibition at Shin-Takashima Station

When visiting Yokohama, besides the seaside strolls, I want to introduce a cultural spot right inside the station. Under Commons Vol. 2 features works created by artists starting from the world and rules of gaming; it’s not just about "playing games," but viewing how games connect with art from a different perspective.
The exhibition is held at Art Center NEW on the B1F of Shin-Takashima Station, running from Oct 16 to Nov 15, 2026, open 12:00–20:00, closed Wednesdays and Thursdays. As this issue is published on Thursday, Oct 22, the venue will be closed; don't plan your trip for that day.
Yokohama Under Commons Vol. 2 Tickets and Artist Talk
Adults ¥1,000, university students ¥800, high school students and below free. There is an artist talk on Oct 25, 15:00–17:00, which is included in the admission fee.
I would link this stop with a walk around Yokohama; check the opening days first and see if there are any events you want to join. This is a recent opening; it's not a new exhibition announced or starting only on Oct 22.

2. Kyoto Raphaël Zarka 2027 Solo Exhibition: Skateboarding, Geometry, and Sculpture, Sales start Dec 1

If you're already planning your Kyoto trip for spring 2027, take note of French artist Raphaël Zarka’s first major solo exhibition in Japan. The exhibition will feature iconic pieces and new works created during his residency in Kyoto, placing skateboarding, geometry, and sculpture along a single path of exploration.
Location: Kyocera Museum of Art, Kyoto (Higashiyama Cube). Exhibition period: Feb 6 to May 5, 2027. Hours: 10:00–18:00 (last entry 17:30). Closed Mondays (except March 22 and May 3).
When and how much for Zarka Kyoto tickets?
Sales begin Dec 1, 2026, at 10:00 AM. Adults ¥1,800, university/vocational/high school students ¥1,300. The announcement specifically notes that group prices for 20+ people are not advance-purchase prices, so check the price list carefully.
I’ll make a note of the ticket release date; "announced" does not mean "open for viewing" right now. Also, the latest info confirms a solo exhibition, not the previously considered duo exhibition; when arranging with friends, refer to the current official announcement.

3. Tokyo Station FONDAN Winter Limited: Raw Chocolate Sandwich Cookies, 6 pieces ¥2,160

For my Tokyo souvenir list, I’m marking down FONDAN’s new "Fondant Chocolate Sand." These feature raw chocolate made with pasture-raised milk tucked between thin, crispy langue de chat cookies. A 6-piece box is ¥2,160 (tax included); it is a winter-limited item.
Available from Nov 1, 2026, to mid-February 2027 at FONDAN, Daimaru Tokyo (1F), connected to Tokyo Station. Hours: 10:00–20:00. This new product is not available for online purchase.
Can I bring FONDAN items back home? Ask about storage conditions
The official announcement does not list preservation requirements for transport, so I won't just suggest "buying them and throwing them in your suitcase." For raw chocolate products, ask the staff about storage temperatures, shelf life, and how to handle them during transit before deciding if they fit your travel schedule.
Also, distinguish this: we are talking about the 6-piece ¥2,160 winter-limited item, not the original 5-piece ¥1,350 version. To buy the specific item, it's best to show the product name directly rather than relying on packaging memory.

4. Hokkaido Hiroo Christmas Forest 2026: Lighting on Oct 24, until Jan 4, 2027

It’s not Halloween yet, but Hiroo in Tokachi, Hokkaido, is already preparing for Christmas. The Daimaru-yama Forest Park will hold a lighting ceremony on Oct 24, 2026. Market starts at 14:00, lighting at 17:00, with music and fireworks.
My reminder: The lighting ceremony is only for one day, but the illuminations last longer. The illumination season runs from Oct 24, 2026, to Jan 4, 2027, usually 16:00–22:00 (17:00 start on the first day). If you miss the ceremony, you can still see the lights during the season.
Hiroo Daimaru-yama Forest Park Access
About 40 minutes by car from Chūrui-Taiki IC. Official data lists 50 regular parking spots and 350 temporary spots for the ceremony. Parking is free; "free" here refers to parking, don't assume event entry is free. No official pricing or reservation limits were noted in this issue.
If you're planning a Tokachi road trip, check the weather, road conditions, and official event schedule first before adding the night view. The attached photo is a reference and not live 2026 footage.

5. Osaka Tadao Ando Architecture Open House: Infroneer Building, Oct 24–25

Architecture fans should keep an eye on the Tadao Ando-designed Infroneer building (formerly MKD10 Osaka) this weekend. It’s participating in the Osaka architecture open house festival, where you can tour the concrete spaces and see the "NOTHING NEW" exhibition.
Public access: Oct 24–25, 2026, 10:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30). Address: 2-5-30 Kyutaro-machi, Chuo-ku, Osaka.
Do I need to register for the Infroneer tour? Can I take photos?
General entry does not require registration, but entry may be limited if crowded. Workshops are already full; lectures require reservations. Do not assume "general entry doesn't require registration" means all programs are walk-in.
Photography is prohibited in some indoor areas; follow on-site instructions. Pricing wasn't listed, so I won't assume it's free. Confirm your target program and aim to arrive well before 16:30.

Is the Zarka exhibition in 2026 or 2027?
The official dates are Feb 6 to May 5, 2027. Tickets go on sale Dec 1, 2026, at 10:00 AM. Don't confuse the two dates.
Can I buy FONDAN winter cookies online?
No, the new product is not sold online. Exclusive to FONDAN, Daimaru Tokyo 1F, from Nov 1, 2026, to mid-February 2027. Check transport and storage needs before buying.

Yes. The illumination lasts until Jan 4, 2027, usually 16:00–22:00. Check the latest info before you go.
Do all Osaka Infroneer events require no reservation?
No. General visits are walk-in, but workshops are full and lectures require reservations. Some areas restrict photography.
Benny’s Final Reminder: Sort your dates first, then plan your route
For this issue, treat the list as follows: Avoid closing days in Yokohama; note the ticket release date for Kyoto and go next year; wait until Nov 1 for Tokyo souvenirs and check storage conditions; distinguish the lighting ceremony from the season in Hokkaido; and for Osaka, seize the two-day opening window but don't ignore registration requirements and photography restrictions.
