Benny’s Japan Insider Vol. 12 | 5 Must-Attend Events in Japan for Autumn/Winter 2026: Marunouchi Music Festival, Shojo Manga Exhibition, and Niigata Night Maples

Hello everyone, I'm Benny! When visiting Japan in autumn/winter, I don't just chase the autumn foliage; I also make time to catch a concert or visit an exhibition—finding activities that are just as fun without the need to rush between tourist traps. In this issue of "Benny's Japan Insight" Vol. 12, I've selected 5 travel inspirations for your 2026 autumn/winter trip to Japan: free street music in Tokyo's Marunouchi, the "Three Greats of Shojo Manga" exhibition in Roppongi, night illumination at Niigata's three major gardens, the LOVOT x Godzilla collaboration, and the free design exhibition in Marunouchi. Check the dates, ticket prices, and participation restrictions before you head out so you can enjoy a more relaxed trip.

Benny's Travel Setup | Packing essentials for exhibitions and night foliage photography

NIID NEO EDC Compact Pouch

NIID NEO EDC Compact Pouch

I recommend this for those who want to travel light and keep their phone, passport, and cards organized. Measuring about 20 × 13 × 3cm with 8 compartments, it makes accessing your essentials while visiting exhibitions or taking transit much more efficient.

The product is currently marked for shipment in mid-November; if you are traveling in October or early November, remember to verify the delivery time. Actual capacity depends on item dimensions. View styles and purchase →

Sothing Vintage Camera Power Bank

Sothing Vintage Camera Power Bank | 10000mAh

Between checking maps and digital tickets during the day and snapping photos of the autumn leaves at night, your phone’s battery life is something worth preparing for in advance. I chose this model for my itinerary because its 10000mAh capacity and vintage camera aesthetic are perfect for those who love photography-themed accessories; please note it is a power bank, not a camera.

Quick Look at 2026 Japan Autumn/Winter Events: How to choose your itinerary?

  • For free street music: November 12–15, MARUNOUCHI SOUNDSCAPE in Tokyo.
  • To see the world of Shojo manga originals: October 28 – February 8, 2027, the "Three Greats" exhibition at The National Art Center, Tokyo (Roppongi).
  • For night foliage in Niigata: The three gardens have different illumination dates; Shoun-sanso starts November 5, the other two start October 31.
  • For LOVOT × Godzilla: Products go on sale October 30; exhibition in Koshigaya runs October 31–November 30.
  • For free Japanese design: October 15–November 29 (3 phases), 88 design pieces showcased at GOOD DESIGN MARUNOUCHI.

1. Free Music in Tokyo's Marunouchi: MARUNOUCHI SOUNDSCAPE 2026

Benny's Japan Insight Vol. 12: November 12–15, 2026, Marunouchi free street music eventMarunouchi event graphic; the main visual is an official illustration, not a photo from the venue. The Harlem Nights indoor performance requires a separate ticket.

If you're in Tokyo in mid-November, I recommend setting aside some time for Marunouchi. From November 12 to 15, 2026, MARUNOUCHI SOUNDSCAPE will bring free street performances to the Marunouchi Naka-dori Avenue. You don't have to fill your entire day; stopping to listen to music while wandering the city is the kind of travel pace I love.

However, keep in mind: the street events are free, but the indoor performance at Harlem Nights on the 7th floor of the Marunouchi Building requires a separate ticket. Advance tickets are ¥8,000 (seated) and ¥6,000 (standing); same-day tickets are ¥8,800 and ¥6,600 respectively. Prices include tax and are for unreserved seating/standing. The venue only accepts cashless payments for same-day tickets, so don't bring only cash.

My suggestion is to check the performance schedule first before deciding whether to listen casually while strolling or to book a ticket for an indoor show. View official program and ticketing for MARUNOUCHI SOUNDSCAPE.

2. Roppongi Shojo Manga Exhibition: Works by Moto Hagio, Ryoko Yamagishi, and Waki Yamato

Manga fans should mark The National Art Center, Tokyo in Roppongi on their calendars. "Shojo Manga Infinity" runs from October 28, 2026, to February 8, 2027, featuring Moto Hagio, Ryoko Yamagishi, and Waki Yamato. To me, this is a cultural itinerary that deserves to be savored slowly, rather than just being a photo-op stop.

Advance adult tickets are ¥2,000; same-day tickets are ¥2,200. Advance sales close on October 27 at 23:59 JST. No time-slot reservation is required for entry. The museum is directly accessible from Nogizaka Station Exit 6, making it quite convenient for your Roppongi itinerary.

Be mindful of the museum's closed days: generally Tuesdays, plus November 4 and December 28–January 5, 2027. Note that November 3 and December 8 are exceptional opening days. I would check the closure dates before planning other activities to avoid showing up to a closed door.

3. Niigata Autumn Foliage Illumination 2026: Don't confuse the dates

Niigata three gardens night foliage infographicShoun-sanso photo provided by Kashiwazaki City (archival photo, not current foliage status); note that each garden has unique illumination dates.

For this season's foliage highlight, I’m focusing on Niigata’s Shoun-sanso, Koshiji Momiji-en, and Yahiko Momiji-dani. The most common mistake is assuming the digital stamp rally period means all three gardens are lit up at the same time. The rally runs from October 31 to November 30, 2026, but illumination dates differ:

  • Kashiwazaki - Shoun-sanso: November 5–29, sunset until 21:00.
  • Nagaoka - Koshiji Momiji-en: October 31 – November 23.
  • Yahiko - Momiji-dani: October 31 – November 30.

If you want to see all three during their overlapping illumination window, the current dates suggest November 5–23. However, this is just the date intersection and doesn't guarantee peak foliage or that it's easy to visit all three in one night. I suggest planning based on your accommodation and transport; it's better to take your time.

The digital stamp rally is limited to one entry per person, and prizes are awarded via lottery and only shipped within Japan. If you are a visitor from Hong Kong, please don't expect a guaranteed prize or shipping outside of Japan. Check the entry fees for each garden separately. The photo of Shoun-sanso in this issue is an archival shot, not current foliage.

4. LOVOT × Godzilla: Launches Oct 30, exhibition in Koshigaya

LOVOT x Godzilla collaboration infographicOfficial promo visual, not a photo from the scene. TM & ©TOHO / ©GROOVE X. Clothing price does not include LOVOT unit.

Godzilla has a cute side! This LOVOT collaboration turns the monster into wearable outfits, which I recommend to Godzilla and robot fans alike. Products go on sale October 30, 2026, at designated stores and online (online sales begin at 12:00 PM JST).

Godzilla outfit: ¥25,000; keychain: ¥3,980; folder: ¥1,300 (all prices include tax). One final reminder: the ¥25,000 is for the clothing only; the LOVOT robot unit is not included.

If you plan to visit Koshigaya, the exhibition in front of LakeTown AEON Cinema runs from October 31 to November 30; the current information doesn't specify an entry fee, so please double-check before leaving. Sticker redemption with movie tickets is also limited to designated stores and while supplies last—not valid at any cinema or shop.

5. Free Marunouchi Design Exhibition: "My Choice 2026", 88 items in 3 phases

Marunouchi My Choice 2026 design exhibitionGOOD DESIGN MARUNOUCHI exhibition visual; 88 items represent the total across three phases.

For those who love Japanese design, I'd add a stop at GOOD DESIGN MARUNOUCHI. "My Choice 2026" features 88 designs selected by 101 judges. Admission is free. Instead of just looking at the aesthetics, I prefer to take my time seeing how the designs respond to daily life and why certain items were chosen.

  • Phase 1: October 15–29, 2026.
  • Phase 2: October 31 – November 13, 2026.
  • Phase 3: November 15–29, 2026.

Location: 1F Shin-Kokusai Building, 3-4-1 Marunouchi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo. Hours: 11:00–20:00 (closes early at 17:00 on the final day of each phase). The 88 pieces are the total for all three phases; they are not all displayed at once. Also, there are gaps between the phases, so don't assume the exhibition is open daily from October 15 to November 29.

If you visit Marunouchi for the music event on November 12 or 13, you could pair it with the design exhibition, but remember that the exhibition closes at 17:00 on the 13th. November 15 is the start of Phase 3. Combining activities within the same area is much more comfortable than rushing across the city.

Benny's final tip: Choose your dates first, then build your itinerary

If I were to pick one city to explore slowly this issue, I'd go with the Marunouchi music and design exhibition route, adding the Roppongi manga exhibition based on interest. If you are mainly chasing autumn colors, carefully note the separate illumination periods for the Niigata gardens.
